MMS activated for iPhone by AT&T, Finally

AT&T has finally activated the MMS service for its iPhone users on Friday afternoon. The service is available for iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS.

Activation of the MMS service on your iPhone would require you to follow a set of instructions given by Apple. Prerequisite involve iPhone OS 3.1 and carrier settings from iTunes. The list of instructions to activate the service is as follows

1.Make sure that you have a working Internet connection on your computer and that you are using iTunes 8.2 or later.

2. Connect iPhone to the computer and open iTunes.

3. Select your iPhone in the Devices list and click "Check for Update."

  • Update to iPhone OS 3.1 if prompted to do so.

4. Click "Update Settings" when prompted.

5. When the update is complete, you will see the following screen:

6. Restart your iPhone.

After iPhone restarts, verify MMS is active by creating a new text message. You should see the camera icon to the left of the text field:

The MMS service can be used to send pictures and videos from the iPhone. The MMS service would be charged according to three different bulk plans or as pay-per-use basis. Bulk MMS plans include 200 MMS per month for $5, 1,500 MMS for $15 and unlimited MMS for $20 a month. For the users who have the FamilyTalk plan, the unlimited usage would be $30 per month. The users not availing to any of these plans would be charged on pay-per-use basis which would cost 20 cents for text and 30 cents for pictures and videos.
