Skype for iPhone gets 3G/WiFi video calling

Skype released its latest iOS app version which brings long awaited video calling over WiFi and 3G video calling to iPhone. The update also brings 'receive only' video support to the iPad. It would also support two-way video calling on iPad 2, when released.

The app can make calls to and from Skype desktop users, both Mac and PC. It can make video calls in both portrait and landscape mode.

Skype 3.0 supports two-way video calling on iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 4th gen. The app requires iOS 4 or above and is available from the AppStore for free.

Yahoo! goes social, buys Foursquare rival Koprol

After failing to acquire Foursquare, Yahoo! has finally managed to buy its Indonesian rival Koprol. While Yahoo tried to acquire Foursquare for $100m, the terms of acquisition of Koprol are unknown.

Koprol is a location based social network, which allows its users to 'check-in' on a particular location and share real time information about the place. The ratings and reviews of a particular place (restaurants, bars, cinema halls, etc.) can be accessed by the users existing at that place.

Koprol's acquisition is Yahoo's attempt to go social as well as increase its mobile offerings. "Users are increasingly relying on mobile devices to communicate and access the internet, and they are looking for seamless integration between those devices and PCs," said Rose Tsou, senior vice president of Yahoo Asia.

"Koprol was uniquely designed for mobile phones and within a year has built a strong user base. Yahoo provides the global scale and technology to accelerate growth in Indonesia as well as introduce the service to new markets.", He added.

Yahoo also unveiled a BlackBerry application for Koprol and would be expanding the application base to other platforms soon.

ITG releases xpPhone pics

ITG released the official pictures of its xpPhone.The xpPhone will be the first to be powered by a PC version of Windows. It also comes with a range of customisation functions like the option between Windows XP, MS DOS and the Windows 7, RAM upto 2GB and storage memory upto 120GB.It would also give different options of touchscreen where the users can choose between 4.3", 4.7" and 7". The camera can also be chosen between VGA, 1.3 MP, 3MP and 5MP.Interestingly, the phone would also feature customizable CPU speed with speed options over and under 1Ghz. The phone would be powered by AMD Super Mobile CPU.

The official pics released by ITG make the phone look good but i am sure it would be bulky and would get even more heavy with the higher end customised options. The ITG xpPhone is not the only xpPhone in the making. ViewSonic is also working on a similar phone that would run a full blown copy of Windows XP.

There might be these rare cases when you end up reaching for an interview process of a company, realising that you no more want the job. It happened to me recently. I applied to a company through my college placement cell. The company was paying 30k per month with accommodation. It was only when i reached their office i realised that the company had recently been involved in a huge fraud and their working style is a century old.

Backing out from an interview through the college placement cell means that you can no longer apply for any companies through them. The only option left, fail in the interview. I had never been so nervous in my life. Trying to fail is much tougher than trying to pass.

If you end up in such a situation, here are a few tips to fail in an interview -

Loosen your tie and the collar button before entering for the interview.
Sit before the interviewer asks you to.
Do not wish him until he does. If he does, offer your hand with the wish.
Put your mobile phone on ringing and ask a friend to call you during the interview.
When the friend calls, pick up the call and tell him that you are in an interview. Do not apologise after the call.
Play with your fingers, ring, chain, anything to show that you are nervous.
If there is no water in the interviewer's cabin, ask for water.
Do not look in his eyes. Enjoy the view from his office through the windows.
When he asks a very easy question, pretend that you did not understand the question. Its very tough to rephrase an easy question. He would end up making it more complicated and finally drop the question.
If he asks about your interests, tell him you like watching movies or reading bollywood news or any other hobby that does not add up to your skills.
Finally, while going out, slam the door.

I didn't get selected and i can assure you, you won't be either. For the ones who want to succeed in the interview, don't do any of the things mentioned here.

MMS activated for iPhone by AT&T, Finally

AT&T has finally activated the MMS service for its iPhone users on Friday afternoon. The service is available for iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS.

Activation of the MMS service on your iPhone would require you to follow a set of instructions given by Apple. Prerequisite involve iPhone OS 3.1 and carrier settings from iTunes. The list of instructions to activate the service is as follows

1.Make sure that you have a working Internet connection on your computer and that you are using iTunes 8.2 or later.

2. Connect iPhone to the computer and open iTunes.

3. Select your iPhone in the Devices list and click "Check for Update."

Update to iPhone OS 3.1 if prompted to do so.

4. Click "Update Settings" when prompted.

5. When the update is complete, you will see the following screen:

After iPhone restarts, verify MMS is active by creating a new text message. You should see the camera icon to the left of the text field:

The MMS service can be used to send pictures and videos from the iPhone. The MMS service would be charged according to three different bulk plans or as pay-per-use basis. Bulk MMS plans include 200 MMS per month for $5, 1,500 MMS for $15 and unlimited MMS for $20 a month. For the users who have the FamilyTalk plan, the unlimited usage would be $30 per month. The users not availing to any of these plans would be charged on pay-per-use basis which would cost 20 cents for text and 30 cents for pictures and videos.

ImHalal is a new search engine that blocks search words which could lead to pornographic results or to the contents that are 'haraam' or forbidden by Islam.

The search engine has a two-level search filter. The words directly leading to pornographic results are banned while the search results related to alcohol, drugs or pork come with a warning message. The founder believes that the user can continue with the results in the latter case as these cannot be consumed over the internet.

The search engine has a 3 star rating system. The search words related to pornographic contents like 'porn' , 'xxx', 'rape' are on a 3 srat rating and are banned completekly. However the serach results for 'beer', 'pork', 'weed' and other related words comes with a one or two star rating wherein the user can continue if they want.

"When users do a search and get a haram rating of level one or two out of three, they are advised to choose another keyword to search, but they can still continue their search if they believe the results fetched will be clean" , said Reza Sardeha, Founder, ImHalal.com.

The serach engine is introduced to relieve the internet taboo in the middel east or in other muslim countries. These countries avoid using internet or letting their children use internet due to the uncontrolled access to any information which could be against the religion or not allowed in their religion.

“We got the feeling that a lot of people in the Middle East, a lot of Muslims, really avoided the Internet and prevented their children from accessing it because they were afraid of what they might come across,” Sardeha said.

The site has already recieved some 4,00,000 unique visitors in the first week of its launch.

iPod nano gets FM radio, voice recorder, camera

The most exciting news from the Apple's Music Event is the upgrade to iPod Nano. The upgrades involve a camera, FM radio, voice recorder and a pedometer. With the camera being obvious after so many speculations and rumors, the FM radio and voice recorder are truly a surprise.

Stave Jobs announced the camera as a 'free' addition to the iPod nano, with 8GB model available at $149 and the 16GB at $179. The nano is sized 1.1 cubic inches. Stave Jobs also insisted n his presentation about 'free' camera on iPod nano, with an average portable flip camera with 4GB storage available for $149.

The new nano would have a larger 2.2" display with voiceovers to tell the user what track is being played currently. The pedometer would calculate the number of steps taken by the user would sync to the Nike+ software.

Integrated video camera can take pictures and record videos. The videos can also be uploaded on YouTube with a single click when the iPod is sync with the computer.

Wouldn't it be more cool if the iPod touch had the camera instead? Anyways, iPod nano with all those upgrades would not be a disappointment for sure.

Burglar made fun of victim on her Facebook profile

As if robbing the 52 year old Victoria Richardson was not enough, the burglar robbed her Facebook account also and taunted her on her own profile. 'Your Nigh Time Burglar' as he calls himself while signing off the victim's profile, managed to rob an iPhone, a Nintendo DS, a Toshiba Laptop and some usual stuff like cash and credit cards.

When Victoria logged in to her Facebook account, she discovered that the Burglar managed to rob her online too. The burglar proudly announces on the walls of victim's facebook profile "on my new laptop". Another one says "Listening to music on my new phone feels so good."

The thief then says that he left the television as it was "rubbish". "I have the laptop , phones ok but a bit scratched itll do, tv was rubbish so I left it , ds was a bonus, now to the porn shop, thankyou toshiba is my favourite make".

Then he sign-outs saying, "regards your night time burglar".

Poor Ms Richardson comments,

"I felt very spooked. I have never felt like that before. It felt like they were rubbing my nose in it.

"They have been in your physical space, and then they are in your online space. My friends could all see what they were writing so it was really degrading.

"It is bad enough being robbed in the first place but this invasion of my privacy has made it doubly painful."

Sussex Police showed their sympathy towards the victim and also said that they are doing their best to catch hold of the burglar,

"Being burgled is traumatic enough for any family but for the culprit to apparently use their stolen possessions to publicly gloat over the crime is a sinister twist.

"As with all burglaries we are taking the matter seriously and a thorough investigation is under way to bring this offender to justice."

Makeing Money Online : As i see it

If you are reading this, you probably have tried some of the get rich quick online methods or are looking for one. There is nothing wrong if you want to make money sitting at home, being your own boss. But, i can tell from my experience, there is nothing like 'get rich quick' in the online marketing business.

When i began online marketing about a year back, i tried all those useless methods like take paid surveys, get paid to read e-mails, get paid to recieve SMS, data-entry jobs and lots of other nonsense. The way as i see it, weather paid or free, all the methods that we talked about now are FAKE! They wont give you any money. They would just utilize your time and your contacts to promote their products/services for free.

Let me first tell you how i found an online income source.I tried to find some new ways and tried searching for some part-time work-from-home jobs on job portals like Naukri, Monstor and others. Finally, about six months back i found a decent part-time online job wherein i sell my articles to a Tech Blog. Starting with a small number of articles, i slowly reached to a monthly pocket money of Rs.3000-5000.

And now, i am working on starting my own website soon. With a few good ideas in mind, a good handbook or a good guide to learn online marketing terms and tactics is a must for starting your own website. I searched for all sorts of such guides (paid or free) but could not find one easily until one of my friends twitted about a website called Sensonize. The guy has put up some great information about online marketing and some honest ways to make it work. Through the site, i have finally found my FREE guide for everything i need to learn about online marketing called ShoeMoney.

We all have been through times when we just loose track of our expenses and get the know of it only at the end of the month. Well i have finally found a tool to track my expenses and also a bar-chart representation of my expenses.

The tool is a website dubbed mychipper.com. It has a user-friendly simple interface to input your daily expenses. You can also input the information about your borrowed/lent money. There is option for recurring expenses too wherein your account automatically updates your expenses on weekly/monthly/daily/yearly basis. Expenses like monthly bills, daily travel bills, passes, membership charges can be put in the category of recurring expenses.

One can also enter the expense detail through mobile, Orkut and Gtalk apart from the website. Another advantage is that the website is new so user names like james, kunal or disha are available easily.

What one would really miss here is the option to track input money. No option for the source of money and hence you would have to calculate the available balance manually. We hope that function will be available soon.

Inventor Tim Kehoe has developed the world's first non-stain color bubble. Dubbed Zubbles, the colored bubbles went on sale after 15 years of research by Kehoe, spending almost $3 million in the making.

Bubbles are the world's most popular toy with about 200 million bottles of bubble solutions sold every year. Creating colored bubbles that do not stain the surfaces on which it pops is believed to be the 'Holy Grail' of toys by many toy manufacturers.

"A lot of people said that you just can't color a bubble," said Kehoe, "which is discouraging when that is exactly what you are trying to do."

Creating a colored bubble from standard dies either didnt give the effect of a full colored bubble or would strain the clothes, eyes, skins of kids when it pops. Kehoe says "I thought a washable bubble was a great idea.But the kids (of a large focus group) were covered head to toen red dye. It looked like a scene from Braveheart."

But the Zubbles dye would fade out in 15-minutes after it pops from almost every material - wood, clothes, skin, nylone, cotton, paint.

"It's a good feeling after 15 years to see colored bubbles become reality," said Kehoe. "After eight years, you think, 'What am I doing this for?' but I am absolutely glad I stuck with it."

The colour bubbles are now available only in Pink and Blue color. But Kehoe says that he can make the solution in any color and other colors would be available soon.
